The Lights Are Going Back Up!

October 24, 2017

Thank you all again for helping bring holiday lights to campus in 2016. Good news – 700 LED lights will be going up outside Old Main again this year. They should be up before Noel Night (Saturday, Dec. 2) and will remain up until Spring Break. I hope you'll stop by and see them shine!

In addition to providing you with a lights update, I wanted to share a new WSU placemaking initiative: Woodward and Warren Park. Maybe you’re familiar with this space? In 2017, we’d like to add sustainable landscaping, pop-up seating, shade sails and lawn games. We’re also hoping to build a WSU Placemaking and Detroit Experience Factory (DXF) satellite kiosk, where students, employees, residents and visitors can go for information on the city.

Like adding lights, activating Woodward and Warren Park will help make our campus more engaging. To learn more and donate, go to Patronicity.com/WoodwardandWarren. Every donation and share counts!

The Lights Are Up!

December 27, 2016

The lights and signage are up outside Old Main! 700 LED lights look good in pictures (below), but they’re even more special in person. They’ll be up through the end of January. We hope you stop by to see them shine.

Thank you all again for helping Light Up Campus!

Look for Lights!

December 16, 2016

We are so close! This week, we invited donors who gave $50 or more to weigh in on where the lights should go. The votes were close. Ultimately, these donors decided the lights should go along Cass Ave. at Old Main—WSU’s signature building. We walked this space with the company we have hired to hang the lights on Wednesday. They plan to get started as soon as there’s a break in the snow—likely Monday, Dec. 19 or Tuesday, Dec. 20.

The plan is to let the lights shine through the end of January, so they will be here when the campus community returns from break. As will the signage (pictured below) recognizing the generosity of our incredible donors.

Thank you again. Look for lights and pictures early next week!

Goal Reached!

December 01, 2016

Thank you all for helping us reach our $3,000 goal!! There are still three days left to donate and any and all funds raised above and beyond our goal will be used towards lighting up campus, so please, if you know someone who was planning to donate, encourage them to still do so.

We will be in touch with all of our donors once the campaign has officially closed.

Stay tuned!

p.s. More than a dozen Wayne State colleges and departments are participating in the 44th annual Noel Night, which is from 5 to 10pm this Saturday, Dec. 3. New this year, Wayne State is partnering with TechTown on a pop-up holiday marketplace. If you donated $100 or more, please look for a personal email with details on early admission.

For more information on the activities taking place on campus, visit go.wayne.edu/noel-night.

Home Stretch!

November 29, 2016

Thanks to 61 generous donations, we have raised $2,280 in less than 5 weeks! With only 4 days to go, we need to raise an additional $720 to reach our $3,000 goal. Help us cross the finish line by donating, and encouraging others to donate by liking and sharing our Facebook posts.

In case you need a reason to donate (above and beyond the promise of holiday lights), here are three:

1. Today is Giving Tuesday, a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration.

2. You can make a donation in someone’s honor. So far, 15 donors have chosen to give in honor of family members and WSU colleges and departments.

3. There are awesome perks, including early admission to WSU’s holiday marketplace (5-10p on Saturday, Dec. 3), featuring 45 local businesses and artists.

$2,280 down. $720 to go. We are in the home stretch!

Thankful

November 23, 2016

This week, we’re thankful for all those who help make WSU’s Placemaking Initiatives possible including our Placemaking Steering Committee, PlaceMakers and donors. Projects like “Light Up Campus” would not be possible without you!

Stay tuned for a more detailed update (with inspiration photos!) on Giving Tuesday.

Happy Thanksgiving,

Emily and Jeri

p.s. WSU may be closed for Thanksgiving, but you can still donate! Making a donation is quick and easy, and donations are tax deductible.

Ready for Lights!

November 15, 2016

Despite this week’s spring-like temperatures, we’ve definitely moved into fall. The sun is setting earlier and earlier, and darkness as much as cold limits people’s ability to enjoy the outdoors. Darkness getting you down? Us too. We’re ready for holiday lights!

The good news is we’re making progress. Help us keep the momentum going by liking and sharing our Facebook posts, and tagging people you think could be interested in contributing (ex. WSU students and employees, local business owners and area residents, and lovers of holiday lights). No donation is too small!

$1,845 down. $1,155 to go. Help us light up campus!

$1,500 down. $1,500 still to go.

November 08, 2016

Feeling nervous, excited, frustrated or fatigued by the election? Here’s a bit of good news. We’re two weeks into our crowdfunding campaign and we’re already halfway to our $3,000 goal!

Crowdfunding for holiday lights may seem small compared to the choices Americans are making today, but small projects can have big impacts. Purchasing and installing holiday lights is one of several small placemaking projects designed to make campus a more inviting place with welcoming, active and safe public spaces. And good public spaces encourage interaction and helps build community.

So, if you’ve already voted and you’re anxiously awaiting national/state/local election results (refreshing your Facebook feed again and again), consider taking a minute to like and share our Facebook posts, and encourage others to contribute.

$1,500 down. $1,500 still to go. Let’s do this!

A Successful Week!

November 01, 2016

We have been overwhelmed by the initial response to this campaign. We set an ambitious goal: raise $900 in week one (roughly 30% of our $3,000 goal). Thanks to 24 amazing donors, we ended up raising $1,040! The majority of donors gave between $5 and $25, although we have received five gifts of $50 or more—including one donation of $500!

In addition to thanking all of our donors, we would like to thank Michelle Iqbal and Idrees Mutahr for creating the video below. Michelle and Idrees are PlaceMakers—students who help make WSU's Placemaking Initiatives possible by volunteering to do everything from arranging flexible seating around campus to painting polka dots on Warren.

$1,040 down. $1,960 to go. Please help us keep the momentum going by liking and sharing our Facebook posts. You can also tag or email people you think could be interested in contributing.
