College of Education Upward Bound
COE Upward Bound is a program that serves high school students in the southwest Detroit area. Our goal is to help and prepare low income, first generation students from Cesar Chavez Academy High School and Western International High School for college. We provide after school tutoring, in state and out of state college trips, mentoring, cultural enrichment, help with filling out college applications, scholarships, we also help with the FAFSA and we have a 5 week summer program.
The purpose of our project is to be able to raise money to provide transportation to our students to Wayne State University for our summer program. Transportation is a big issue with our students since they are unable to drive themselves and their family members work or have other commitments which makes them unable to drop them off at Wayne State. We are hoping to raise enough money so that our students could be picked up and dropped off for the summer program as well as for the weekly college tours that we provide during the summer.
This project will ensure that we have a higher student count during our summer program. During the summer, classes are provided in the morning followed by lunch and a different activity every day of the week afterwards (Last year it included Aadizookan, Art with Vito Valdez, STEM day, College Tours, etc.) Our students really enjoyed our program and found it educational and informative. After the 5 weeks were up, we had parents contact us and tell us they really saw growth in their son/daughter. Unfortunately, we had some students that wanted to attend but couldn't due to not having transportation. This project will ensure transportation for our students and we are confident that we would have a higher student count if we provided transportation. This project would help the students in the community have a chance to participate in our summer program without worrying about how they will get there.
