College of Education Upward Bound
Thank you for helping to fund COE Upward Bound, which is a program that serves high school students in the southwest Detroit area. Our goal is to help and prepare low income, first generation students from Cesar Chavez Academy High School and Western International High School for college. We provide after-school tutoring, in-state and out-of-state college trips, mentoring, cultural enrichment, help with filling out college applications and the FAFSA, scholarships, and a five-week summer program.
The purpose of our project is to raise money to provide transportation for our summer program students. Transportation is a big issue because the students are unable to drive themselves to WSU and their family members often work or have other conflicting commitments. We are hoping to raise enough money so that our students could be picked up and dropped off for the summer program as well as for the weekly college tours that we provide during the summer.
This project will ensure that we have a higher student count during our summer program. During the summer, classes are provided in the morning, followed by lunch and a different activity every day of the week, such as Aadizookan, Art with Vito Valdez, STEM day and college tours. Our students really enjoyed our program and found it educational and informative. After the five weeks were up, we had parents contact us to say they really saw growth in their child. Unfortunately, we had some students who wanted to attend but couldn't due to transportation issues. This project would help the students in the community participate in our summer program without worrying about how they will get there.
